When I Do These 2 Things and I’m Less Likely to Crash Out
Some days, productivity advice feels laughable. Drink more water. Add a 10-step morning routine. When you’re already stretched thin, none of that helps. In fact, it makes me even more mad that the goal post keeps moving.
What actually helps me not crash out are two very small things. Disclaimer, they are not glamorous. They are not life-changing. But they work and I feel better. If you’re my kind of person, maybe this will resonate with you too?
1. I Fix My Bed
This is not about aesthetic perfection or becoming a “bed person.” It is about closing a loop. A big theme in being an executive assistant too, actually.
When the bed is fixed, the day has a starting point. Even on chaotic mornings, it creates a subtle signal that something is already handled. A box is checked! No decision required. No mental negotiation. It is done. Exhale.
I have noticed that when my bed is not fixed, everything feels a little more unfinished. Like the day is already behind before it starts. When it is fixed, I feel slightly more capable. Not wildly motivated. Just steadier.
And honestly, coming back to a made bed at the end of the day feels like a gift from your earlier self.
2. I Clear One Surface
Not the whole house. Not every room. One surface.
For me, it is usually the kitchen counter or the dining room table. These are the places where clutter multiplies so fast. Mail. Bags. Half-finished projects. Things that need decisions (and just looking at them stress me out while they are waiting for an answer).
When those surfaces are clear, my brain feels quieter. I stop seeing unfinished tasks everywhere I look. I am less reactive. Less irritated. Less likely to spiral over small things.
Clearing one surface creates visible calm, which turns into mental calm. It is the fastest way I know to reduce overwhelm without reorganizing my entire life.
Why This Actually Works
Both of these habits do the same thing. They reduce decision fatigue.
When your environment feels unfinished, your brain keeps working in the background. When things are reset, even in small ways, your nervous system gets a break.
This matters more than most people realize, especially for busy moms and professionals managing work, family, and constant responsibility.
You do not need a perfect system. You need a few reliable resets.
Start Smaller Than You Think
If everything feels like too much, do less. For real! If you take one thing away from this, it is to do just a little bit.
Fix the bed. Clear one surface. That is it.
These are not productivity hacks. They are stability habits. And some days, stability is the real win.
